All because of you

Not infrequently we get a call or email from someone outside the DC area asking if there is an organization like Family & Youth Initiative where they live. Almost always the answer is no.

There are few organizations or programs like ours anywhere. There are many reasons for this - including beliefs that teens cannot be adopted (so scarce resources are focused on finding adoptive families for younger children) and that services (not relationships) are what young people need to successfully transition from foster care to adulthood.

We obviously think otherwise - we believe that everyone, especially teens and young adults, needs supportive people in their lives and that adults do adopt teens (especially when they have opportunities to get to know those teens).

We are always happy to share insight and advice with organizations thinking about starting a similar program. And honored when reminded of just how unique our approach and programming are.

We were especially honored to be recognized as the Adoption Exchange Association's March "Member of the Month." The AEA is the country's premier national association of adoption professionals and organizations. In other words - people who are are working to ensure that ALL children in foster care find family. From their introduction:

As professionals we know youth who have left the system without permanency through legal guardianship or adoption are especially vulnerable as they enter adulthood without formal supports. Fortunately, all DC teens who are waiting to be adopted, or those on the trajectory to age-out of foster care, can access a unique intervention targeted to help these teens/young adults facilitate, establish, and strengthen relationships with supportive adults.

You are the reason DCFYI teens can have these amazing relationships. It is only because of your interest and support that we reach more teens every year, making some pretty magical relationships happen.

We are getting closer . . .

We are excited about returning to our "normal" in-person events soon! For now, all events will be small and outdoors with focus on unmatched teens and adults.

We will increase the size of events when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, join us virtually to connect with other volunteers at one of the Volunteer Meet and Greet events.
